2021 Millinery Collective with Fenwick of Bond Street

7th May 2021 by Sophie Dallison

We are delighted to be part of the 2021 Royal Ascot Millinery Collective, in association with Fenwick, the Official Royal Ascot Millinery Sponsor.

Royal Ascot is, and always has been, synonymous with sartorial elegance. This is upheld by our Royal Ascot Dress Code and annual Style Guide, which invite guests to take inspiration from the summer season’s key trends and contribute to an occasion heralded as a major fashion event in its own right.

After a year of uncertainty and lockdowns, this year’s Royal Meeting will truly herald the return of occasionwear when it opens its doors in June as one of the first occasions for more than a year where Britain can get dressed up. Innovative millinery remains the crowning accessory for the Royal Meeting and the Royal Ascot Millinery Collective, now in its sixth year, provides a platform to celebrate the best of British millinery after a challenging year for these artisan designers due to Covid-19.

The ongoing support from Fenwick strengthens the esteemed collection further, thanks to the exceptionally-curated designer fashion and world-class millinery for which this British institute is recognised – you can find all 10 designs stocked exclusively in their Bond Street store.

Feltmakers Hat Design Award 2021

6th May 2021 by Sophie Dallison

The annual Feltmaker’s Design Competition is without doubt a major award for those working towards a career in millinery, being tailored specifically for students, apprentices and those who have recently launched headwear businesses of their own. With no set theme, the competition opens the door for innovative design to develop processes, shapes, styles and interesting combinations of felt with other materials. Seven prizes are given overall, including one for artwork, which must be submitted with each hat, to show the thought process and inspiration behind the design, including the construction and any new developments used in the making.

Due to the pandemic the competition was organised a little differently this year. Entrants were first requested to send in images of their hats together with the relevant backing information digitally. All the information was then collated and sent out to the judges electronically. An initial selection was then made with those shortlisted being asked to send in physical hats and artwork. The final judging took place on May 6th.
Rachel Trevor Morgan, Edwina Ibbotson and Hilary Alexander were there in person and Bill Horsman, Eda Rose and Carole Denford who joined via Zoom.

We are thrilled to announce the winners of the 2021 Feltmakers Hat Design Competition:

First Prize – Sarah Blackmore – KCC/Morley College HNC graduate (2020)
Second Prize – Lucy Davies – Justine Bradley-Hill student
Third Prize – Rebecca Gray – KCC/Morley College

Craftsmanship Award – Fleur Curtis – New starter, Oscar & Willow Millinery
Commercial Appeal Award – New starter, Ellie Millinery
Innovative Use of Felt – Nara Taylor – KCC/Morley College
Artwork and Presentation – Nike Lachner – Fashion Institute Vienna

Congratulations to you all.

Royal Style Guide 2021

27th April 2021 by Sophie Dallison

We are delighted to present our contribution to the 2021 Royal Ascot Style Guide in association with Longines.

This annual celebration of contemporary and traditional style will be one of the first occasions where Britain can get dressed up and we anticipate this year’s fashions will be more eye catching and imaginative than ever. However, we are keen to demonstrate to racing followers around the world that the Royal Meeting is about looking your best – and that doesn’t necessarily mean you have to buy something brand new.

Garments sourced from charity shops, nearly new boutiques, vintage emporiums and resale websites can be found throughout the Style Guide alongside British and sustainable fashion labels. Innovative millinery remains the crowning accessory for the Royal Meeting and for gentlemen, classic tailoring, light summer suits and ties in pastel shades come to the forefront of formal wear.

This year, Rachel Trevor-Morgan featured in the Royal Enclosure style guide with an RTM signature – our Dior style grey feathered bell.
