Feltmaker Hat Design Award 2022

We are thrilled to announce the winning entries of the 2022 Feltmaker Competition. We received a total of 32 entries from all over the UK and Europe of which 22 entries made it through the pre-selection process. The competition was judged in person at Haberdasher’s Hall by William Horsman, Carole Denford, Edwina Ibbotson, Noel Stewart, Rachel Trevor-Morgan and George Lomax, buyer at Fenwick of Bond Street.

 

The winners are:

 

First prize – Alison Cooper
Second prize – Eleonora Tata, Morley College graduate
Third prize – Nicola Miller, Kelvin College Glasgow

 

Craftsmanship – Lauren Thompson
Commercial Appeal – Aliyah Dankwah, Northampton College
Art and presentation – Maria Ilektra Charalampopoulou, Nottingham Trent University
Innovative Use of Felt – Jasmine Gibson, Northampton College

Fundraising for the Ukrainian Appeal

At the beginning of March, as the conflict in Ukraine was taking places we were finding it difficult to reconcile trying to grow our business post-covid and the horrors we were seeing on the news. We decided to start two fundraising campaigns for a week to raise funds for the British Red Cross – Ukraine Fund.

We raffled one of Signature Italian Straw hats for £10 a ticket and on Friday 10th March, we picked Nicola Patrick as our winner.

Alongside our raffle, we organised an auction for a bespoke hat from our SS22 collection and our highest bid was £2500. We would like to thank everyone who bought tickets and bid in the auction, thanks to you we raised £6000 for the British Red Cross. We couldn’t have done it with you.

LCW 2021 | Unveiled – The Meissen Edition

Now in its third edition, the ‘Unveiled’ project joined forces with the renowned porcelain manufacturer Meissen to create a collection of fine porcelain inspired hats. Taking inspiration from their extraordinary designs from the last 300 years, nine milliners including Stephen Jones, Harvy Santos, Bridget Bailey, Leo Carlton, The Season Hats and Sarah Blackmore each created a unique headpiece to showcase their craft whilst highlighting the mastery of the Meissen workshop.

The exhibition was co-curated by three internationally acclaimed milliners: Rachel Trevor-Morgan who has a loyal international clientele and is warrant holder to HM The Queen, Edwina Ibbotson whose hats are regularly featured in Vogue, Tatler and Harpers Bazaar as recently seen in British Vogue on Oscar winner Emma Thompson, and Noel Stewart, who regularly collaborates with leading fashion designers such as Erdem and Givenchy.
 
In a world first, the milliners collaborated with the craftsmen of Meissen to create a set of porcelain hat pins. Each milliner came up with the design and sketched what they thought their pin should look like. It was then up to the artists of Meissen to interpret those designs and make them come to life on such a small piece of porcelain. Can you guess who’s is whose?

 



London Craft Week is an annual event that showcases exceptional British and international craftsmanship and is a journey-of-discovery through events across the capital such as hidden workshops, ateliers and open studios. Unveiled –The Meissen Edition is being hosted by the iconic Thomas Goode & Co. in their new Burlington Arcade premises.

Create Day is an opportunity once a year to pause, appreciate beauty and applaud the talent in our midst. To reconnect with our own creativity and bring like-minded people together. To enjoy twenty-four hours of non-stop human ingenuity and engage with over 300 artists, makers, designers and creators in real time across the globe.

With that in mind, we invite you to our workroom and discover some of the traditional process and techniques used in millinery to make bespoke hats in this teaser video.
