Jo Hutchinson

A Small Hat Project

1st June 2014 by Jo Hutchinson

What’s not to love about this project… In April 2014 we were contacted by Legoland Windsor with a fabulous commission, a range of miniature hats for the Royal Family at Miniland, which is part of Legoland, Windsor.

In an exclusive make over for Royal Ascot, seven head turning 10cm high regal Lego models including The Queen and The Duchess of Cambridge, wore our original designs; each one created by hand in exquisite miniature detail.   Designing for a tiny LEGO Monarch was an entirely new experience. We had to be very creative about how we scaled our production down; we used the top of a perfume bottle as a mould for Her Majesty’s hat and stitching so tiny really needed special care and attention.

The Miniland LEGO Royal line up comprised Her Majesty the Queen, The Duchess of Cornwall, Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice, Zara Philips, The Duchess of Cambridge and her mother Carole Middleton. They were then situated in front of Miniland’s miniature recreation of Buckingham Palace for guests to admire during Royal Ascot Week.

The Queen wore a colourful straw hat in bright yellow with tiny hand painted silk flowers.  The Duchess of Cornwall’s dove grey side sweeping picture hat was decorated with minute feathers swirling forming an elegant circular design whilst the Duchess of Cambridge wore a Royal Blue straw slice hat with two miniature quill feathers.   Zara Philips’ metallic disc shaped hat was topped with tiny maroon red feathers in an arrow formation whilst her cousins Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie wore a white beret with jay feathers and a green feather hat.
